This article will work for you if your installation of MS Teams is suffering at least one of the following symptoms: lag, media not loading, inability to send text messages or files (such as images) or weird behaviors like parts missing from the interface or similar.
First steps
A bad or inestable network connection can be causing issues with MS Teams. Most of the time, restarting your modem can solve a lot of network related issues. Also, you can check if your computer hasn’t been restarted for a while. In that case, is recommendable to restart your computer (in Windows environments, make sure to select Restart from Start). It’s also a good idea to check and apply updates for your SO.
A quick fix: sign out and then log in
Under your profile pic at the right upper side of MS Teams interface, click and select the option Sign out. Then, log in again with your credentials. If your problem is related to bad or corrupt cache files, this is a quick fix.
The Ol’Reliable: uninstall and reinstall Teams
- For Windows users: Close MS Teams. Make sure to close it from the System Tray by left clicking the MS Teams icon and choosing Quit. Then go to Control Panel, look for the option Programs and Uninstall a program. Restart your computer. Then go to (log in if necessary) MS Teams website, download and execute the installation file.
- For Mac users: If MS Teams is already open, localize it in your Dock and click and hold over MS Teams icon until you see the option Force quit. Go to Finder, then Applications, find Microsoft Teams and then press right click and choose Move to Trash. Then go to (log in if necessary) MS Teams website, download and execute the installer.
For persistent issues: Delete the MS Teams data folder
Caution: Before attempting this, be sure to backup the Teams cache folder as way to rollback if there’s an issue. You can just change the name of the cache folder or copy it to another location to restore it later if necessary.
First close and uninstall MS Teams. You can follow the instructions above for that purpose. Then:
- For Windows users: Press Windows Key + R you will see a Run screen popup. In Open, copy and paste the following direction:
%appdata%\Microsoft\Teams
and press Enter. Delete the contents of the folder that opens and then restart your computer. Install MS Teams again (you can follow instructions from step 3).
- For Mac users: In the top menu, click on Go > Library. Then localize the following path: /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams and delete the contents of that folder. Restart your Mac and then install MS Teams again (you can follow instructions from above).
